Traffic Safety

Bicycle Helmets:  Helmets are required for all bicycle riders under the age of 17 when the bicycle is used anywhere other than on private property.

Seat Belts:  Seat belts are required to be worn for all front seat passengers in a motor vehicle, regardless of age. Child safety seats must be used for all children under age 8 or who weigh less than 80 lbs. Under no circumstances is a passenger permitted to ride with a child or other person on his or her lap, whether seat belted or not.

Operation of low-speed electric bicycle or Scooter:  Please review the updated information.

Parking:  Parking is permitted on the oceanfront street ends except between the hours of 8pm and 6am. Parking restrictions on the street ends are enforced 7 days a week, year round.

The 30-minute, 1-hour and 2-hour parking restrictions on Mount Street, Main Avenue, Bridge Avenue, Park Avenue, and Lake Avenue are enforced June 15-Labor Day. Parking enforcement officers will begin issuing warnings for the first weekends in June, with strict enforcement expected to begin on the last weekend in June.

All other parking restrictions (yellow curbs, blocking crosswalks, facing wrong way, blocking sidewalks, etc.) are enforced year round in all areas of the borough.

Speed Limits:  On most borough streets, the speed limit is 25 mph. The speed limit on Main Avenue (Highway 35) is mostly 35 mph, but drops to 30 between Harris Street and Johnson Street. The Bay Avenue speed limit is 35 mph. All speed limits are enforced by RADAR. Violators are subject to fines in excess of $200 and up to 5 points on their driver’s license.

If you have any traffic related questions or concerns, or to request a temporary placement of the department’s electronic speed monitor, contact Detective Robert Sherman or PTL. Joe Kraus at(732)8920632 ext.409.
